1 - what have you learned from your audience feedback?

i have devised a range of different methods for audience feedback, aimed mostly at our primary target audience, but also our secondary and tertiary audiences and people that aren't even in these classes. below are audience profiles for the three types of audience. (click pictures to enlarge)

below is a prezi designed to be the desk of a member of our primary audience. the playlist on their screen shows the sort of music that they would listen to: charli xcx, tonight alive, paramore, chvrches etc. the post-it note shows that they are in a band and play guitar, as does the guitar plectrum. the sketchbook and pencils scattered around (plus the doodle) show that the audience member is arty. these are the people were are specifically aiming for.

firstly, at the beginning of december, we got feedback from all other groups on the first draft of our music video. as it wasn't finished and needed a lot of tweaking, there were lots of things that people thought we could improve upon. the most feedback we got was questioning the box that zahra (our drummer) was playing. this was due to school rules which caused restrictions during filming - we explained afterwards that this was the only way we could think to make up for the lack of real drums! a lot of feedback was also given on the colour of the video. the whole first draft was in black and white. a few people liked the black and white whereas some people wanted some colour.

we took all of the feedback into consideration when editing it to make our final piece. we altered the colour so that all of the verses were in black and white and choruses were in colour. we also inserted more individual shots of zahra playing real drums to try and detract from the box in other shots. this seemed to work - less feedback was given about the colour and people rarely commented on the box.

these are pictures of the online survey (all audiences) i created for people to take part in. it asks questions such as 'what is your age' as well as opinions on the music video. this is to see what our audience as a whole enjoyed or disliked about the video and whether they thought alleyways as a band were relatable and current.
this survey was not targeted to a specific audience such as our primary, secondary or tertiary audience but instead to anyone that watched the video to get general opinions.

my mum very kindly put the links to our music video and feedback survey on her facebook with a request that all of her friends answer the questions and my sister asked some of her friends to do the same. this is where the majority of our feedback came from which is good because it gave us a wider audience - different genders and ages of people with different interests, rather than just asking other groups and friends to answer the survey which could have been biased.

we got over 25 responses and the feedback we got was mostly positive with the positives and negatives/constructive criticisms shown in padlets below:

a lot of the positive feedback stated that we were fun and unique which is the image we were going for - different from everyone else and like we really wanted to make music.

everyone who completed the survey said 'yes' to the question 'do alleyways appear to be a relevant/current/relatable band?' and most gave answers as to why. we learnt that people think we are realistic and current as our image is fun, unique and quirky; we have good chemistry as a band and we gel well; we have an 'indie' aesthetic that is quite popular nowadays, as well as other points, seen below:

we have conducted a screening session for people to watch our music video and give feedback via a questionnaire which rates things from 1-5 such as costumes, performance, narrative etc. the general response was very positive with a lot of 4 and 5 star ratings.

above are some pictures of some of the responses we got. from this we can deduce that our costumes were overall well-received with lots of 4 stars and one response of 3 stars. our location got a similar response and we got 5/5 all round for how well the video fit with the song. we had a very average/below average response to how easy it was to follow, meaning we could possibly have made it a bit clearer and easier to understand. overall the video was very well-received and we got lots of 5s and a 4.5!

below is a video of some audience feedback that i filmed with some members of our audience asking general questions about positives and negatives of the video. again, the video seemed very well-received. we were told that everyone enjoyed the video and one person wouldn't even change anything if they were to direct the video themselves!

overall, feedback has been very positive for our music video. things we could have improved on include changing the colour of some shots and replacing the box that zahra (our drummer) played on into actual drums which was impossible due to circumstance.

2 - how did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Powered by emaze

zahra created this emaze to show what technologies we used in all of the stages of creating our music video.

3 - how effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

After completing our final music video our focus was then driven towards making a Digipak to the best of our ability as well as one which accurately fits in with the style and motifs of our music video. We also aimed to create suitable advertisement for our newly formed band accompanied with an active social media presence. We accomplished this in several different ways such as the use of iconography, magazine articles and interviews among others.

The main goal of our marketing campaign throughout the run-up to the release of our music video was to utilize the closeness and intimacy shared the band shared as not only a group of musicians but as affectionate friends. I believed that we displayed this effectively throughout our digipak, website and music video as no individuals were left out or kept out of frame. A clear motif in our music video is the togetherness of the band - something everyone can relate to as we all share a deep connection with either friends or families. Our campaign replicates this extremely well.

New artists usually apply iconography to their media campaigns in order to help hem stand out and be noticed by their target market. In this case our target audience was young adults between 16-21 who were interested in pop rock and alternative rock. By analysing and exploring other bands digipaks of this genre we came up with we came up with ideas that we could place in our own digipak and music video that will appeal to our designated audience. We chose to use silhouettes throughout digipak, marketing campaign and music video as it has been used extremely successfully previously to attract a selected audience as shown in The White Stripes' 'Under Great White Northern Lights' digipak.

We also used silhouettes due to the fact that nobody in the band would be overshadowed in our band as no one can steal the limelight as we are all blank spaces. We are all equal. Straight away, the audience would understand how close together and intimate the band is which relates back to the main goal of our marketing campaign. We want to be a personal band. Evidence of this can be seen in our digipak, shots in our final music video and photos featured on our bands' official website.

Font and Logo:

As shown in the Screencast above, we have successfully used our logo which is he self-titled 'Alleyways' across all of our ancillary texts. This font also successfully links our website and digipak as well as our final music video. We did this to create a sense of familiarity which is shown throughout our marketing campaign. The motif of a large white font allows our audience to instantly recognize our logo as well as the fact we use our own band name as an emblem which means that more individuals can recognize us and get acquainted with our name.

4 - in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

After conducting research into electro-alternative artists and their brand identities, we compiled a list of conventions that we aimed to retain during the construction of our music video and ancillary texts. We recognised the conventions by analysing real media products from artists such as The 1975, PVRIS, CHVRCHES and Charli XCX. These influences helped us construct our own music video, website and digipak. We also disputed some conventions such as the sexualisation of women (Charli XCX) in contemporary music videos and a blend of colour scheme (black and white and full colour).

I have used YouTube and Photobucket to present the music video and ancillary texts.

Music Video

Genre conventions:
The 1975 and PVRIS both market themselves with a black and white band image - they are both rarely ever seen in full colour. CHVRCHES are seen in silhouette during their 'Lies' music video and Charli XCX oozes a fashionable nature in her videos. We were inspired by all of these elements and tried to incorporate them into our own image and video. However, we twisted our band image by marketing ourselves in black and white but then subverting to full colour during the chorus sequences of our first music video to reflect the energetic and bright nature of the music. We like the idea of Alleyways presenting themselves with a dark visual aesthetic that juxtaposes the upbeat genre of music. This idea is similar to the concept for The 1975's 'Girls' video. The band were criticised with conforming to a major label for their prior video as it was in full colour which contrasts their slick black and white image. In response, The 1975 released their 'Girls' video in bright colour. We did the same except instead of making a statement, we reverted into full colour to surprise the fans.

Style of Music Video:
After all listening to 'Fast In My Car', we agreed that we wanted to create a fun, energetic music video that fit the song's tempo and title. The song is very modern and so we all said that we would emit a 'trendy' style in our choice of dress. This style also corresponds with the current interests of our target audience and fits the stylish conventions of several examples of artists' of the electro-alternative genre. In our music video, we kept to a strict 'trendy' dress code and incorporated fairy lights into some some selected performance shots to conform to the electronic genre's classic sensibilities.

We also created a steal-o-matic of our music video influences and certain shots that inspired us in videos of the alternative genre.

Music Video Narrative:
Music videos are conventionally edited between performance and narrative sequences. However, after investigating videos of the electro-alternative genre, we found out that the artists tend to perform throughout the music video - even during the narrative sections. We decided to mix this up a bit and feature narrative shots that included performance and others that did not.

Top left: PVRIS - 'My House', Top right: The 1975 - 'Girls'
Bottom right: CHVRCHES - 'The Mother We Share, Bottom right: Charli XCX - 'Breaking Up'

The above examples all include performance during their video however CHVRCHES' performance is intercut with narrative shots instead. We combined both of these elements together in our video so that we have performance during some narrative shots and shots of us performing in the drama studio spliced with the narrative.
Above: Performance
Below: Narrative

Andrew Goodwin's Music Video Theory (Dancing in the Distraction Factory, 1992)

Goodwin stated that there are five key characteristics of a modern music video in his 1992 study. We supported some of these conventions and challenged others.

Digipak

We analysed the conventions of digipaks in the alternative genre and applied some of them to our own Alleyways product. We also challenged some conventions such as displaying the artist on front of their EP/album cover. We aimed to stay mysterious and cause intrigue which would hopefully gain positive attention.

We were inspired by album covers that featured a simple image on the front. We felt that it would be more appropriate to display a photograph of the band on the front cover of a debut album rather than an EP. We managed to retain our brand image through the repetition of the font and colours used. The front cover of the digipak also relates to the 'Fast In My Car' music video through the fairy lights imagery and backdrop.

Website

Branding, Interactivity and Purchasing Opportunities
After more research, we found out that the three most important elements of an artist website are purchasing opportunities, interactive capabilities and consistent branding. Therefore, I have compared Charli XCX's official website with our own to see who's is more equipped in the aforementioned three fields.

Interactivity:
- Charli XCX's site provides the viewer with a flashy 'enter' button positioned on a lollipop that cracks when clicked and directs them to the home page. When the lollies are hovered over by the mouse, they bump about in response. The site displays social media links throughout and allows fans to view all of Charli's music videos to date. A 'Sign Up' page allows the fans to keep up to date through regular e-mails.

 - Our site gives the opportunity for the viewer to stream the debut single for free on the home page via a music player. Social media links are provided throughout. Our site has a merch store on its own domain as opposed to Charli's site. A 'Bio' page is supplied too to give the site a personal touch - something that Charli's also does not have. Video content has not only music videos but teaser trailers too to keep fans up to date. There is also the opportunity to sign up to the official monthly mailing list.

Purchasing Capabilities:
- Charli's site links viewers to purchase her discography through iTunes, Amazon and Spotify links found on her 'Music' page. Her 'Live' page lists all upcoming tour dates of hers and their respective ticket links. However, her 'Store' link, found on the home page and header, redirects the viewer to an external site which lets her image down slightly.

- Alleyways' site supplies the viewer with iTunes links to pre-order the debut EP. It also provides GigsandTours, Ticketmaster and SeeTickets links to buy tickets to all upcoming tour dates. The 'Store' page allows fans to internally purchase official merchandise and in some cases even customise the colour of the chosen item. We felt that by establishing our merchandise store through the official site gave the situation a more personal touch.

Brand Consistency:
- Charli's site follows a strict pink colour scheme which relates to her latest studio album's design and its campaign. The repetition of lollipops further establishes this. These two elements also appeal to her target audience's interests. The use of overwhelming colour is featured in Charli's music videos too.

- Our site maintains a black and white colour scheme which is synchronous to the digipak and music video. There is synergy between all Alleyways media products aesthetically thanks to the colour scheme and choice of font used.

In summary, we used, developed and challenged the conventions of alternative music videos, websites and digipaks whilst also building our own brand image that fits the genre's target audience. We used and developed the traditional ideals of alternative music videos but also challenged them through changing colour scheme. We dismissed the idea that the artist should be displayed on the front cover of their album/EP and used the conventions of an alternative website in order to make it seem as legitimate as possible.

FINAL - fast in my car

below is the final product that we created to paramore - fast in my car. we are very proud of it and pleased with how it turned out. we took our feedback into consideration and altered several things from our first draft, for example the chorus is now in colour.

first draft feedback

our peers gave us feedback on our first draft with all of the marks we were given being 30+ out of 40, which we were very pleased about.

strengths:
- 'ellie's performance is AMAZE - and she looks hot as fudge'
- 'performance stuff was great'
- 'great variety of shots'
- 'ellie is gorge'
- 'jon u fab too'
- 'good song'
- 'the set is fab'
- 'best video!'
- 'ellie's good performance! looks a natural'
-  'split mouths good'
- 'ellie's performance is excellent!'
- 'KEEP BLACK AND WHITE!!!!!!!!!!!'
- 'www: ellie's performance, dom's f1 driving'
- 'very strong performance, esp. ellie'

weaknesses:
- 'why is zahra playing a box?'
- 'constant use of B&W is making some shots look really dark and un-seeable'
- 'not sure about the box or the bath?'
- 'lose b&w'
- 'some shots have too much dashboard in the car'
- 'drumming is wronggggg'
- 'pixelly shots?'
- 'don't like ending'
- 'better in colour maybe?'
- 'need to focus more on ellie'
- 'the box.... why?'
- 'need a bit more convincing performance by dom and zahra'
- 'zahra isn't playing drums at the start, she's playing drums'
- 'some shots are slightly too dark'
- 'why is zahra playing a box?'
- 'ebi: drum kit not box'
- 'focus more on ellie!'
- 'black and white... constant use is questionable'

from this feedback we can gather that our performances are good and the video as a whole is good, yet a prominent problem throughout is the use of a box as zahra's drum kit. the use of black and white throughout has been disputed, so to keep with our original plans and to 'cater' to everyone's tastes, we are using black and white with colour in the chorus. ideally we would reshoot the drama studio performance shots to get rid of the box and replace it with an actual drum kit, but we cannot reshoot as there is too much of that footage in the video which blend well together and we are unable to move a drum kit into the drama studio due to school rules.

final constructions

this is a photobucket that jonathan created of our final constructions.

fast in my car - first draft

this is our first draft for our music video. in the coming weeks we will experiment with colours and filters and see how it will look with the choruses in colour and the rest in black and white. i am very pleased with this; although there is a lot to be done to improve, shots that need to be re-shot and editing issues to be fixed i'm very proud with my first draft.

magazine advert research

Powered by emaze

jonathan created this emaze presentation comparing several magazine adverts from different artists as inspiration for our magazine articles.

digipak - peers

i gave feedback via a surveymonkey on all of the other groups' digipaks and said what went well and what could be better. my favourite digipak was cosmo's.

i love the link between the name 'cosmo' and the galaxies theme. the colours blend well together and i love the individual, unique drawings like the skeleton below george's face. the editing is slick and flawless. i really don't think i could fault this digipak.

another favourite is the encoded digipak. i love the consistent white cloudy background. i think it looks very clean and professional. the only things i would say to improve are the plain cd - i'm not sure if that's what they were going for but i personally would like to see some kind of design even if it is simple. also, the white text fades into the background at some points and i can't see the words. perhaps all the text should be black, or a darker grey.

digipak feedback

our digipak received mostly positive feedback from the other groups. our digipak was rated one of the top two. below are the specific comments that we were given:

The bottom left square is the best picture out of any on the digipaks. I think the entire thing is very professional and the theme is clear and obvious.

Alleyways digipak is my favourite by far. It looks so professional from the lyrics page to the professional layout of the front covered image. There isn’t much to improve and i am struggling for things to suggest.

I really like Alleyways digipak, introduces the band and the genre at the same time, could include more writing on the CD.

WWW: Like the picture of the Group together a lot it is high quality.
EBI: Not a fan of the bin on fire or CD. The bin picture quality isn't the best, if retaken it might look better. The CD is extremely basic so unless you’re going for minimalism I suggest soothing more interesting. I also hope that the microphone image isn't the front cover because it’s more suited to the inside of the CD holder. I personally do not like the silhouette shots maybe keep one and have another band photo in an interesting location.

Alleyways is also one of the top digipaks and needs no words.

The alleyways digipak have quite a few images on theirs that make it look over loaded. a lot of the pictures look professional. You can see that the text works well with the black coloured background. The overall layout is really good some of it is really over loaded but still looks amazing.

Good, strong imagery here; the font matches, everything looks great - apart from the images don't totally flow. Maybe rearrange a few, swap them out to get a better balance! I'd make the font bigger on the front cover as well, apart from that, it's brilliant!

Great pictures and really like the text. All looks very slick and professional and links to the genre. Nothing bad to say really!

I think this is possibly the best as it has colour and sticks with the bands themes and has synergy with the other products. It has a lot of good pictures which have been nicely edited to fit the style of the band and the genre.

I really can’t think of anything to improve on for this I really like the outcome of the digipak.

A more interesting front cover just a picture of a microphone would not make me want to pick up the album if I saw it in a shop.

I like the theme and text. It is hard to tell which is the front and back covers.

Theme is good Text is easy to read Hard to distinguish between front and back covers etc.

Great photographs, professional editing and layout.

I love it all and I would improve nothing. Perfect.

Everything about this digipak is amazing - the colours, the text, the images, the genre AND the overall layout. Improvements: there aren't any - where can I buy it?

in response to this feedback we will change our digipak as we see fit to try and improve it.

editing

this is a screengrab of the timeline i see during editing in adobe premiere pro and this is the editing i've done so far. i've put in a lot of our best footage to see how many gaps we need to fill and specifically what parts. there are lots of little pieces that we need to film as well as a couple of re-shoots and a very large, long gap at the very end of the video.

kerrang! interview - update

jonathan changed the kerrang! article i made to make it look more professional and accurate for the magazine using one of the newer pictures we took in the most recent photoshoot.

website - peer feedback

our peers evaluated our website and gave back generally positive feedback, saying that our website looks professional and is informative, fun and quirky. there were a few small things that we needed to improve including changing the currency of our store from dollars to pounds, erasing the names of images and changing some text colours so they are easily seen on top of background pictures.

jonathan changed the currency to pounds...

... erased the image names...

... and changed colours to make them fit the website better.

digipak - final

here is our final draft of the digipak! jonathan finalised this using technology on his phone as well as his laptop. our last two panels are a lyrics sheet for our single fast in my car and a full-band photo complete with the band's individual names.
we have 'rebranded' alleyways with a darker aesthetic complete with golden hints such as fairylights and fire and i feel that our digipak complements this newfound image which juxtaposes the bright and upbeat nature of our music.
overall i am very pleased and proud of this digipak and believe that it is very unique and represents alleyways very well.

digipak - update

after putting together a first draft of a digipak idea we were all happy with, jonathan created a second draft which was more intricate and professional. to create this digipak, jonathan and i were inspired by labelmates the 1975 and universal's lorde. all that is left is to add the two final panels to make a professional six-panel digipak, unique to alleyways.

gopro test shots

the last time we filmed, we took the gopro along for the car journey to test the aesthetic as we hope to put some fish-eye car shots into our final product. we tested different angles in the car and found some that we think work very well that we will try to replicate in our final music video.

production diaries

#1 - 19/09/14
during our first meeting, we presented all of our music video ideas and chose three of them to put forward for our final a2 music video. we decided that we would like to produce a music video for either: paramore's fast in my car, nina simone's feeling good or paramore's born for this. we all uploaded the three tracks to our blogs and spoke about our opinions on them.

#2 - 22/09/14
in today's lesson we decided to produce a music video for paramore's fast in my car. we conversed about our ideas for what we can include in the video such as balloons, performance shots in the drama studio, the inclusion of dom's car and silly string. we also began to put together a narrative that would run throughout the video where we are all picked up by dom in his car and i, as the vocalist of the band, will sing in the passenger seat whilst the rest of the band play their instruments in the backseats. for our music video, we are hoping to all be dressed in colourful colours and be surrounded a fun atmosphere. to create this vibe, we will invest in as many bright props as possible.

#3 - 23/09/14
today we talked about what roles we are all going to play in the production of the fast in my car music video. after researching band names, experimenting with 'shortcut' and 'backroads', we all decided that our band will be called 'alleyways'. jonathan will be researching directors, i will be putting together the website, zahra will be comprising a poster for the alleyways' ep and dom will be researching similar artists. i will also take part in a lip syncing task to prepare for performing during the video.

#4 - 24/09/14
during today's lesson we began working on our selected tasks. i started putting alleyways' website together using wix, dom researched a few similar bands and their digipaks. zahra helped dom. jonathan also created a song lyric timeline to help us during production.

#5 - 25/09/14
during today's lesson, jonathan and dom researched some famous music video directors such as spike jonze. i continued creating alleyways' official website and zahra began designing a poster for the ep release. we have decided to do our lip sync task tomorrow and to take some professional photos of the band to be used in our digipak, on the website and posters.

#6 - 26/09/14
in today's lesson time, we went to the music department's recording studio to film our lip sync task. we all felt that we were particularly successful in producing a good lip sync video and the others thought that i performed exceptionally well.

#7 - 29/09/14
during today's lesson, jonathan researched similar artists' magazine interviews. dom and zahra researched similar artists and influences and i researched similar artists' video interviews. we all prepared ourselves for conducting a photoshoot tomorrow for our website, digipak and social media platforms.

#8 - 30/09/14
today we made our first attempt at a band photoshoot. as there are four of us in the group and all four of us are in the band, we had great difficulty with taking photos, having instead to film ourselves and take screengrabs. this was particularly hard and was one of our most challenging tasks. we decided that we would redo the photoshoot using different equipment and in a different manner.

#9 - 1/10/14
in a second attempt at the photoshoot, we had a friend, george, take our photos for us in different poses and locations around the school. this photoshoot went much better than the first and we were very pleased with the results.

#10 - 2/10/14
in today's lesson, we started our storyboard and began to put together a risk assessment. we assessed each other member in our group and learnt our strengths and weaknesses.

#11 - 3/10/14
today we continued our storyboard and finished our risk assessment. we also put together a sheet of obstacles that we may encounter and how to overcome them.

#12 - 6/10/14
during this lesson we focused on doing research for things such as cd covers and digipak, video interviews and written interviews. we also finished the storyboard and I created a halfway presentation for our band.

#13 - 7/10/14
we filmed our halfway presentation today explaining to the other groups who we are and what we were about. we answered some questions about the band. as we were the first group we weren't sure of what we were doing but we think we pulled it off relatively well.

#14 - 8/10/14
the storyboard was filmed and uploaded onto the computer. dom recorded a voiceover explaining the shots using audacity. we also spent this lesson separated catching up individually on blog work.

#15 - 9/10/14
in this lesson we watched a presentation explaining about consistency across brand products. we had to create a presentation of our own - the album that i chose to look at was don't panic by all time low. we used this exercise to think about how we would like to present our band's image across products.

#16 - 10/10/14
we had a visit from pete fraser during our lesson today. we had a two-hour talk about music videos and how to achieve great results for ours, as well as watching other student videos. the talk was very helpful for all of us.

#17 - 14/10/14
first day of filming! we went out in dom's car to brook lane in galleywood and filmed our first shots of the beginning of the video, getting picked up in dom's car. this shoot didn't go so well as the aesthetic wasn't very good, so will require a re-shoot.

#18 - 15/10/14
we created a calendar to see what we would be doing in the next couple of days as two of our members will be away in barcelona which could cause a lot of problems so we need to stay on top of things. i completed production diaries and created my own steal-o-matic, dom sent a letter to fuelled by ramen to ask for permission to use their song, zahra did the shooting schedule and jonathan emailed mrs cooper to ask about using the recording studio after school - she said yes!

using the recording studio, and with the help of george brewer, we shot full performances of the song, taking special care to get a variety of shots with multiple cameras, to achieve the 'cramped' aesthetic we want for our final video and to make it look realistic. this footage was a lot better than our first footage, which we have to re-shoot.

#19 - 16/10/14
today, jonathan and zahra weren't available as they were in barcelona for the weekend. dom and i uploaded yesterday's footage onto a computer and put it into editing software where we gave it a black and white filter, rifled through the shots to crop them and find the best parts and slotted together several images from different angles to give ourselves a taste of what the final product will look like.

#20 - 17/10/14
i drew out a rough draft of what we wanted our website to look like and compared it to the website at its current state. dom looked through the other classes' evaluations of our halfway presentation and uploaded them onto his blog. we also wrote our 4 key choices: track, artist, audience and record company. i also planned the outfits i would wear in the video.

#21 - 20/10/14
jonathan and zahra were back! we edited footage and went through our blogs with miss brookes to see what we were doing well and what we needed to go through. jonathan and zahra caught up with the stuff they had missed whilst they were away.
filming day three. we spent an hour setting up lighting and background in the drama studio and did two hours of performing our song with cameras set up in various different angles. this was our best shoot yet which came out with amazing footage. we were really happy with how it went and it really boosted our spirits for the rest of the video.

#22 - 22/10/14
dom, jonathan and zahra planned their costumes for the music video. we all looked through our performance footage, which we were extremely pleased with, and i uploaded it onto our existing adobe premiere pro project which has all of our best footage on it and will hopefully give us an idea of what the finishing product will look like.
filming day four. we went to dom's house after school, picking batteries up on the way for bubble guns. we arrived, got changed into our costumes and sorted out the bubble guns and cameras. we shot in dom's bath, on dom's stairs and in his living room in spontaneous shots that we hadn't previously planned, just to see if they worked. we then went into the garden and filmed bubble gun fights both static (with tripods) and handheld to add dimension. we were attempting to make it look like summer depsite the cold!

#23 - 23/10/14
in today's lesson, we discussed how we could change our digipak design idea to suit the band more. we had conflicting ideas about the digipak before: one idea was that we should have the band on the album cover whereas i thought that, for a small band who were just starting out, having an image of us wouldn't attract much attention. i came up with the idea of having a simple image of our set on the front, as i originally proposed, whilst having a picture of the band silhouetted against the same background on the back cover. we all agreed that this is a good idea for the band, so i drew up a rough idea of our digipak.

#24 - 24/10/14
today we continued to complete blog work and allow others in the group to catch up. this was our last lesson before we broke up for a week so wanted to get all the research and planning we could get done as possible.

#25 - 3/11/14
our first day back after half term. we decided to spend the lesson catching up on the new things that our teachers had put on the media hub.

#26 - 4/11/14
today we put together a digital version of our digipak using a collage maker, showing exactly what the finished product will look like. we also created a survey to see what our audience wants from our band.

#27 - 5/11/14
we filmed some extra filler footage, namely the close-ups of our lips which will be put at the beginning of the video.

#28 - 6/11/14
today i did a lot of work on the website. i updated every page and added a tour dates page and a sub-page for warped tour. i changed some of the design of the website and changed the url. we all put these changes on our blog. zahra created a steal-o-matic. i uploaded my own steal-o-matic. together we designed some alleyways merchandise that we will sell on tour and on our website.

#29 - 7/11/14
jonathan created a poster or magazine advert during this lesson. i edited the teaser trailer and attempted to make it a little less grainy and replace the grainiest footage.

#30 - 10/11/14
today jonathan and zahra were in an art class all day, leaving dom and i in class. today i created a kerrang! introducing article.

#31 - 11/11/14
i spent this lesson editing a lot of our footage together to the music to try and form some kind of draft of our music video. we edited together the footage we shot the other day to create an 8-second sequence that will go in our video.

#32 - 12/11/14
in this lesson we did reflections of our blog progress so far. i created an emaze presentation to show the progress i am currently making.

#33 - 13/11/14
today i created a powtoon on record labels that would potentially sign our band. dom continued his self-evaluation, jonathan updated the band's twitter and he and zahra did some work on institutions.

#34 - 14/11/14
we looked at weather forecasts to see which days would be good in the coming week to shoot some more footage as we are completely up-to-date on blogging, research and planning but are falling behind slightly on production.

#35 - 17/11/14
during this lesson i created a presentation on cross-media consistency and design work for the band chvrches and their album, eps, singles and gig posters. i also uploaded some edited footage of our bubbles sequence and put that on my blog. i planned how i would answer the evaluation questions when my group reaches that stage.

#36 - 18/11/14
today i created a poster using photoshop for the first time to promote the release of our ep. we also had a group meeting with miss brookes who told us how to better our blogs and also what we were planning for the coming days/weeks. we planned a photoshoot for tomorrow and discussed clothing, backdrops and props.

#37 - 19/11/14
in this lesson we completed our next photoshoot. the theme was posh, well-dressed with hints of messiness/grunge. it was a fun photoshoot rather than a serious one. i edited the saturation, hue, exposure, contrast and highlights of the photos to make them look more polished and professional and we were really pleased with the result.

we also did some more shooting after school. we travelled to dom's house testing out the gopro for the car shots we will do. we spent a while creating a fire - dom was brilliant and created a beautiful blaze whilst the rest of us set up chairs, gathered blankets and tested angles and exposures on the camera. by the time we'd gotten it lit, it was dark and we were ready to shoot. we did lots of experimental shots of all of us from different angles and different distances from the fire and some solo shots of my face with the blaze flickering in front of us. it went very well and we were all pleased and tired by the time we were finished.

#38 - 20/11/14
we uploaded the footage from last night and watched it and found that there are lots of little pieces of gold amongst general chit-chat as we filmed constantly throughout the evening. we will extract our best pieces of footage to put into the music video. we also evaluated other groups' websites and got feedback on our own, which we amended.

#39 - 21/11/14
today i continued editing the music video. jonathan uploaded our gopro test shots and zahra continued to analyse peer websites.

#40 - 24/11/14
i wasn't here during this lesson. our finalised digipak was uploaded as well as photos of evidence of filming and recce shots.

#41 - 25/11/14
i edited some more footage today, trying to piece together all of our best footage to see what needs to be re-shot, what else needed to be shot and what parts/timings we were missing.

#42 - 26/11/14
we uploaded finalised versions of some of our constructions - the digipak and the kerrang! interview. i also continued to edit and showed my group and miss brookes the first parts of our music video. notes were written down about how to improve and when we could film to get extra footage in. we planned to shoot some more footage of me tomorrow and to shoot some instrument shots on friday.

#43 - 27/11/14
we set up a black background and some studio lights and filmed several shots of me on my own - the footage was good quality however i am much more used to lip-syncing than actual singing, which miss brookes made me do. i don't look as enthusiastic as usual on these shots due to slight illness and a little bit of embarrassment! we also shot some group parts which i then uploaded and put onto the music video file.

#44 - 28/11/14
today jonathan wasn't here. i continued editing and also started to create a blooper reel, as is common with our group whenever we create a video! we also shot after school. in one of the music rooms where drums are set up, we put up a white sheet and some fairylights to try and emulate the drama studio performance shots and got some footage of zahra drumming. we then moved to the drama studio and got some of dom playing guitar. as jonathan was still too far away to come into school, we called it a day there. we will upload the footage on monday at school to see how well they turned out and if we can use them.

#45 - 2/12/14
today we filmed the interior car shots we needed with the gopro. we set out with just the gopro and a bag of party poppers in dom's car and drove around for the lesson filming performance from different angles in the car.

#46 - 3/12/14
we uploaded the footage of the car and i edited it into our first draft. we hunted for the camera that we shot zahra's drumming footage on, to no avail. we planned to film again on friday after school or thursday during lunchtime.

#47 - 4/12/14
we found the footage! i uploaded it onto the first draft and spent all day cutting and editing and adjusting the brightness/contrast etc. of the footage trying to make it as slick and flawless as possible ready for our first draft deadline on friday. i showed it to the group who said that they loved it and were very pleased with it. i uploaded it onto youtube.

#48 - 5/12/14
i wasn't in today but i know that the group looked at everyone else's first drafts and evaluated them, which i will do when i am back at school.

website - other artists'

1. grace starr
what went well - the homepage immediately tells the viewer what grace starr is like: very pink, very girly. there are lots of photos which all link together - pink, lollipops etc. also the homepage has very current news on it. it's good that as soon as she does an interview/releases tour dates, they are the first things you see.
even better if - if you click on the audio play buttons on the 'media' page, some don't play music and some play a random song by a male rapper. there are some grammatical errors on the 'about grace' page.

2. nicholas alexander
what went well - the background of the homepage has lovely, striking colours. the homepage includes current news about nicholas. the 'first noticed' video on the 'about' page is a very good and clever idea.
even better if - there are some grammar errors that could be fixed on the 'about' page. on the 'tour' page there are pictures of other artists which need to be deleted.

3. encoded
what went well - the countdown on the homepage is a great widget. the colour scheme of the website matches the photos well.
even better if - there are obvious and consistent grammar errors on the 'band' page which need to be fixed. there is a countdown that is already at 0 on their 'tour' page.

4. cosmo
what went well - the huge picture fits well with the layout. it is a good idea to have his twitter all over the front page of the website to attract fans immediately. the tour dates page is VERY cool and well made.
even better if - some pages are completely blank e.g. 'meet cosmo' and 'contact'.

5. hybrid beauty
what went well - there is an element of mystery on the home page. nothing is told about the album and i like that. it increases anticipation and tension for the album. the idea behind their photoshoot is creative.
even better if - i want to see MORE photos! updates of what they've been up to e.g. interviews, teasers etc. would be great.

6. alex echo
what went well - the banner at the top is really nice and so is the slideshow of pictures on the homepage.
even better if - it is very plain and takes about a minute to go through the whole website.

7. james couleur
what went well - the background picture is very creative and fits well with the layout. the live twitter feed is a very good idea and keeps fans up to date. the gallery is chock full of pictures which is brilliant. the merchandise is my favourite out of everyone's - very creative and clever.
even better if - there's a lot missing e.g. the teaser trailer isn't on the front page where it says it will be and the album and tour pages are empty.
