self-evaluation

after having done peer evaluations of each member in our group i have come to the following conclusion:

1. i am not great at time management this year (i was much better last year at getting into gear and getting things done)
2. i input creative ideas
3. i am good at motivating the group

one thing i need to improve upon:
- getting more motivated to DO THINGS. i need to constantly be uploading to my blog, editing and creating things e.g. teaser trailers

what i have learned from this project so far:
- i feel better when i have lots of things to do. i like to know what i'm doing and be able to do it quickly and often. i like having lots of creative ideas and getting others' feedback on them.

group strengths and obstacles

so far our hardest task has been creating a storyboard and gathering new, interesting and creative ideas for our video. one of our weaknesses as a group is that we are lacking motivation this year as this is a much more stressful and intricate project. another is that we are terrible at time management and put things off until the last minute, which is what we did with the storyboard.
other obstacles we've had to overcome have been not being ready to film, e.g. by not bringing into school what we needed and booking the rooms we wanted. once we got the hang of booking rooms it became much easier and we have done well to film since then. this has picked up our motivation and caused us to work faster and more effectively as a group, as we have 'found our feet' as bloggers and as a band.
we work well together, which is our biggest strength. we all have skills and qualities which complement each other and so we have been able to divide most of the tasks relatively equally. the filming we have done, we are very pleased with, particularly our performance shots with fairylights and silhouettes.

website - photo gallery

we are constantly updating our website to try and make it as full up and authentic as possible. above you can see that we are adding photos as we take them so that we have as many as possible on there for our new 'fans'.

steal-o-matic

this is a steal-o-matic that jonathan created with ideas from other music videos that are similar to the ideas we'll put in our final music video. this will help us to visualise the final product better.

photo ideas

zahra took all the photos from our first photo shoot and put together potential album covers.

she edited some of the pictures to see if they would look good with any of the album covers she put together.

inspiration - video

bring me the horizon - drown

bring me the horizon released a music video for their song 'drown' which features a couple of things we hope to emulate in our music video. there are lights behind the band, bubbles, silhouettes and deliberately unenthusiastic singing, all of which we have included in our footage so far. a difference, however, is that this video has a narrative linking the scenes together which we have not included in our own video and all of the previously stated elements are in different shots in ours unlike this music video.

digipak idea 3

this is our digipak idea. it features a front cover, a plain back copyright sheet, a cd and a back cover.

this is the front cover. it features a picture of a microphone silhouetted against our backdrop in the music video: a white sheet draped over by fairy lights with a dark background behind it. it will have our name, 'alleyways', in plain white writing in our 'signature font'.

this is a plain black piece of paper with white writing in our font on it. it reads 'DIRTY HIT RECORDS. © 2014 DIRTY HIT RECORDS. THE COPYRIGHT IN THIS SOUND RECORDING IS OWNED BY DIRTY HIT RECORDS. FULLY LICENSED EXCLUSIVELY IN THE UK.'

this is a template of the cd we will have inside. it is inspired by my original digipak cd idea. instead of two plain lines, there will be two lines of fairy lights on a plain black cd with a white rim around the edge. it will read our name and copyright details.

this is the back cover of the sleeve. it features a picture of us silhouetted against the white background on the front cover. the tracklist will be in white, layered over the top of the picture. this links the whole digipak and the music video together.

fast in my car - first draft

this is the first draft of our final piece. it is a performance shot from our second day of filming which we did in the recording studio intersected with other footage we have just to determine cuts and how they blend. the final product will not feature this shots so heavily but instead these shots will intersect the rest of the music video.

to improve:
- the dark shots are very grainy. this needs to be fixed if the shots are long, however in quick succession we can probably get away with it
- the colour shots need to have some kind of filter on them to improve the colour: the saturation is very high
- we need more footage to be the base of the video rather than performance

shooting schedule

this is our shooting schedule for our first 4 shooting days filming all of our performance shots. we tried to put as much detail in as possible so we were certain of what we were filming that day and the strict timings we'd given ourselves.

costumes

these are the costumes that jonathan will wear. he is dressed in skater clothes to appeal to our young, alternative audience. jonathan is a quiet and reserved character in person, until he gets on stage when he is energetic and outgoing.

costumes

these are the three costumes that zahra will be wearing in the music video. zahra is a feisty character who may seem quiet yet takes all of her energy out on the drums. she is bright, which will match my choice of brightly-coloured costumes.

evidence of filming

this is a video that miss brookes took behind the scenes of one of our performance run-throughs. we were experimenting with different lighting combos and in this particular performance we just had our fairylights on and a strobe light. we were really pleased with how the footage turned out and we hope to use the strobe section in our instrumental.

evidence of editing

these are photos of us going through the editing process. soon we will upload a first draft of our music video.

costumes

these are the three costumes that dom will wear throughout the music video. this fits with dom's character as he is the cool, trendy, funny one. his style coincides with the idea that our band is new, modern and trendy.

photoshoot 3

evidence of filming

our best shoot yet! after an hour-long set-up we filmed multiple performances in front of a white sheet using two big studio lights, two reels of christmas and fairy lights and a white spotlight in the drama studio. we filmed from all different angles and managed to get our best footage. we think the aesthetic of this shoot was beautiful and fits our band perfectly.

4 key choices - record company

the record label we chose was dirty hit records. they are a relatively small record label who are different to the other bigger, commercial record labels.

other artists they work with include little comets, the 1975 and benjamin francis leftwich.

4 key choices - audience

primary audience: electro-rock/electronic/rock fans. rock is such a broad genre with many subgenres and as we are something new and interesting word may spread around all rock fans. this hopefully broadens our fanbase.

secondary audience: teenagers. as we have a fun, upbeat sound we could attract younger teenagers who are starting to 'branch out' of their music taste and want to expand from pop and chart music but don't want to venture too far out. we are a mix of pop and rock.

4 key choices - artist

after choosing the song we had to come up with an artist. we decided to be a band rather than a singer as most groups have chosen a solo musician or single-genre group and this would be something fresh and different. our band is also mixed-genre which we think would be our unique selling point - two females and two males.
we have instructions to stray as far away from paramore's image as we possibly can. the first thing that we changed is our genre: instead of being a female-fronted rock band, we chose a female-fronted electro-alternative band as our song choice involves a lot of electronic sounds such as the synthesizer at the beginning.
i will be the vocalist, dom the guitarist, jonathan the bassist and zahra the drummer. we all have to have a different personality or 'role' in the band. i have chosen to be the kooky, almost ditzy frontwoman who doesn't really take anything too seriously.

4 key choices - track

after narrowing our song choices down to three final tracks, we decided on fast in my car by paramore for multiple reasons.
we couldn't do the nina simone track feeling good because none of us would have been able to capture the soul and age of her voice as we all look too young and inexperienced.

we couldn't do the bastille track no scrubs because bastille's singer has such a distinctive voice and the song was too slow to make interesting; we didn't want to bore our audience.

fast in my car is upbeat and fun and by choosing this song we managed to make our genre different from the original song: paramore fall under the 'rock' genre but by listening to the song we made our band electro-alternative. the song is also different than anyone else's track choice in our year.
